How to built my own autonomous system?

How do I start?

By calculating the consumption of the devices I use in Wh.

Appliance power (W) x Hours of operation(h)/24 hours

EG: 400W heat pump x 2.5h per day = 1000Wh 1000Wh

Battery option

Having calculated the Wh I need I divide by the operating voltage of the battery. I multiply the result by the days of autonomy I want (at least 2) and double again for at least 50% discharge.

EG: 1000Wh/24V= 41.66Ah x 2 days autonomy = 83.32Ah x 2 for 50% discharge 166.66Ah battery

How many Photovoltaic panels do I need?

To calculate the power of the photovoltaics I need to know the hours of sunshine per geographical area. (eg Crete 7h summer and average winter 3.5h) and the consumption of my devices (Wh).

For consumption of 1000Wh in winter I need: 1000Wh / 3.5h = 285.7Wp

Which charge controller?

From the technical characteristics of charge regulators I choose the one that can control the power of the panels I need.

Converter selection

The inverter must have a power greater than the total of the devices to be operated. (See technical specifications)

How do I start?

Calculating the annual consumption of the supply to KWh.

By calculating the annual consumption of the supply in kWh. We add up the recorded kWp from the provider's billing accounts to see the kWh we consume per year. ( it is good to look back 2-3 years for cross-reference. )

How many kWp of photovoltaic do I need?

Having calculated the  KWh from the provider's billing accounts to see the annual consume ανά εγκατεστημένο KWp.

Indicative :

For Crete 1650 KWh/KWp, for mainland Greece 1550 KWh/KWp for Northern Greece 1400 KWh/KWp.

If for example I need 28000 KWh per year and I am at Crete:

28000 KWh per year / 1650 KWh per KWp for Crete = 16.96KWp Photovoltaics

What is the total power I am allowed to install?

The maximum power that you are allowed to install is determined based on the “Agreed Supply Capacity (KVA)” by the provider per geographical area and is found on the provider's bill.

How many Photovoltaic panels do I need?

To see the amount of panels we will install, we convert the KWp needed into Wp. 

EG: 16,69KWp x 1000 = 16690 Wp

Having chosen which panel we want to install we divide by the total power we need by the power of our panel.

EG: panel Jasolar 270 Wp

 16690 Wp / 270 Wp 67.8 pieces

So I will have to install 62 panels of 270Wp

Which converter do I choose?

The inverter that will be chosen must have a nominal power almost equal to and slightly greater than the total power of the photovoltaics that I will install.

If it is smaller it may burn when I have maximum output on my system and if it is too large I may have reduced system performance.

Due to various characteristics that must be checked for the suitability of the inverter in relation to the type and number of panels it would be good to consult our technical team.

What else do you need?

The remaining parts of the system are a panel with lightning protection, cables of suitable cross-section, measuring device and of course the deposit of the envelope to the provider.
